There is no doubt that the Albayzín is the most suggestive quarter in Granada. Located on a hill on the left bank of the Darro river, it has almost wholly preserved its Medieval urban plan.
We will find twisted alleys and hidden little squares; from most of which the view on the Alhambra will seem like a dream. Stately mansions, churches, monasteries, nunneries and mosques, museums... and, above all, very narrow alleys with barely room for two persons, warm light surprising us by turning bright around a corner and revealing a thrilling landscape.
Our apartments are located in the middle of the Albayzin, under the shade of the first mosque (Gima Al-Ta'ibin) which has been transformed into a church (San Juan de los Reyes, Saint John of the Kings), whose tower (or minaret), is well preserved (you may enjoy its view from the tower and from some of our apartments), and was built at the same time and in the same style as the Giralda of Sevilla and the Kutubia of Marrakech.
We are now at the same distance from the Saint Nicholas Balcony (where President Clinton said that he had enjoyed the most beautiful sunset in the world) and the Paseo de los Tristes (Promenade of the Sad Ones) from which the Alhambra looms over the on-lookers, enchanting them. Walking around this quarter, you will be able to glimpse different views of the Alhambra. And you may also see them from the terraces in our apartments... while enjoying an aperitif.
We will be glad to help you prepare your itinerary, a promenade through the Carrera del Darro, one of the most beautiful streets in the world, and winding down to the Paseo de los Tristes, not forgetting to turn in some of the side streets to glance upon an Arab well (aljibe), a monastery, or a simple little square... .
Or you may walk by the Cadima Alcazaba (Citadel), under the Arco de las Pesas and the tiny Plaza Larga to reach the Dar al Horra Palace. .
You must be at the Albayzin at certain times and certain places. Without a doubt, the sunset is the most important time. The Alhambra turns completely red one moment and, a blink of an eye later, when the sun sets, it turns white. It is, indeed, a thrilling view. And, by the way, one of the best places to admire this phenomenom is from the terraces in our apartments, one of which is the highest portion of one of Granada's ancient Zin wall (XI century), which we have covered in glass, to allow you to enjoy it while preserving its genuine characteristics without endangering its integrity.
